Unite calls for Cadbury products boycott
Although not a finance sector issue, Unite members (particularly
those based in the Bristol area) may well be interested in this
campaign.
Workers from the threatened Cadbury factory at Somerdale, Keynsham,
which makes Cadbury Mini Eggs, Crunchie and Fudge bars, have called
for a boycott of all Cadbury products in protest against the planned
closure of their plant.
Their union Unite has backed their call and the boycott of all
Cadbury products will start in the Bristol and Bath area. Unite
leaders said it will then be rolled out to other areas where Cadbury
operates and union members across the UK will also be urged to
support it.
Somerdale workers have reported early evidence emerging of consumers
returning Christmas products with letters of complaint about the
planned closure. Members of the Bristol and Bath public are already
calling for a boycott by writing in to local newspapers and
commenting when they sign petitions. There is also anecdotal evidence
of local firms emptying their vending machines of Cadbury products.
Trucking Crunchie, Fudge, Double Decker and other family favourites
back from Eastern Europe will cause massive environmental damage,
adding an extra 7 million food miles each year to the chocolate treat
you buy at the checkout.
British chocolate should continue to be made in Britain. Cadbury jobs
are good jobs, well paid, jobs worth having. We need to save them for
our children and grandchildren. The workforce of Cadbury are
campaigning to make the company listen. We need YOU to stop buying
Cadbury until they commit to staying in the UK.
So next time you are at the checkout:
* If you are worried about the environment - say no to
Cadbury's chocolate
* If you want to support the local community - say no to
Cadbury's chocolate
* If you want to help the workers save the factory - say no to
Cadbury's chocolate
